Amblyopia in kids | Lazy eyes | Causes & treatment

Amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye,” is a condition in which the vision in one or both eyes does not develop properly in early childhood. It is typically caused by a difference in the visual acuity between the two eyes, which can be the result of a variety of factors such as a misalignment of the eyes (strabismus), a difference in the refractive error between the two eyes (anisometropia), or a physical obstruction in the visual field of one eye (such as a cataract/corneal opacity/ptosis, etc). Amblyopia can occur in one or both eyes and can range in severity. In mild cases, the affected eye may have slightly reduced vision, while in more severe cases, the affected eye may have significantly reduced vision or even become blind. Treatment for amblyopia typically involves correcting the underlying cause of amblyopia (like spectacles for refractive error) followed by patching the stronger eye in order to force the weaker eye to work harder and develop better visual acuity. This treatment is most effective when started at a young age before the brain becomes fully wired for vision in one eye. Children with amblyopia may also be prescribed eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct any underlying refractive errors. It is important to detect and treat amblyopia early, as the condition can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. Regular eye exams can help to identify amblyopia and other vision problems in children.
